Laurel, the thousand-faceted artist whose voice is recognizable among a thousand, offered us her new track ‘You’re the One‘ on a silver platter on April 14th. The East London singer songwriter emphasizes the fact of mixing alcohol, feelings to let go of the truth in such a very realistic way, with her usual flawless vocals and 80s remastered vibes. Review.
Laurel had already set the bar pretty high with her single Scream Drive Faster last summer, which quickly became her most streamed song. With 7.5 million streams, she well-earned her place in the best albums and songs of 2020. But the queen of bewitching sounds has more than one trick up her sleeve! She came back with a brand new BOP called You’re the One.
Laurel Singer : Meet the Woman Behind the Art Song
If you ain’t familiar with Laurel’s universe yet, she draws her inspiration from her emotions, light and dark, and the places where she has lived : England, France, United States… This constantly moving artist is constantly renewing herself artistically. As she was producing her long awaited debut album Dogviolet in 2018, she also wrote a journal called The Mutterings of a Laurel. In the book, she presents a glimpse into her personal life and explores the themes of loneliness, heartbreak, self-discovery, new beginnings and falling in love.
Since her last album, she moved back to London and chose to release lighter songs. The vibe of her new music is strongly influenced by the 80s pop stars. Scream Drive Faster was the first song of Laurel’s new era and is part of her last EP, Petrol Bloom, released later in 2020.
She returned in 2021 with the new track You’re the One, produced by Chrome Sparks and mixed by Geoff Swan. This retro pop song also happens to be the first single of her upcoming EP, which should be released in June via Communion Records. It all sounds very promising, right?
Laurel You’re the One Lyrics
In the official video of You’re the One, Laurel is in a parallel world. She teleports from one place to another. It gives us movie strip vibes, with lots of special effects and retro colors. It could also picture the feeling of getting lost in your thoughts and emotions when you’re drunk and try to speak your truth.
Call you late at night
LAUREL
Don’t know what to say
(Wanna runaway, way, way, way, yeah)
Indeed, Laurel evokes the irrepressible urge of calling her lover. She cannot resist her addictions and crushes. It perfectly highlights how all our drugs, whether it’s people, alcohol, sex or real drugs, seem less real and deep late at night when we’re high.
And we’re only dancing
LAUREL
We’re only swaying
Then I’m only saying
That you’re the one now
She finds comfort in people and her loved one become the one that could save her. The singer needs to scream it all over again. Well, what she needs even more, is him to actually hear her. She doesn’t want to wait to be sober to have this real deep conversation.
Under Cali skies
LAUREL
You could hypnotise
It’s already happening
This love turns into a lust. She can’t see anything else than her lover, and the late night atmosphere, when the rest of the world is sleeping, makes it even more real. He’s her one!
This strong-willed english singer seems determined to provide a new kind of depth and color to her artistic journey. One thing is for sure, this track will definitely be part of the best new songs of the month. You’re the One whetted our appetite for the full EP in June and we hope to have you on board in the Laurel fanbase by then!
