How to use Uber in Santorini?
Not everyone is familiar with Uber. Here’s how to use the application, and general safety tips to apply before and during the journey.
How to book an Uber in Santorini?
First, you need to download the Uber app when you have data. Then open the app and type in your destination. Check your meeting point and make sure you’re there before the car arrives.
Once you’ve filled in all the details, you need to choose the type of ride you want.
The options are usually: normal ride, X ride (to share with someone else), green ride (more environmentally friendly), comfort ride or van ride (more space and seats than in regular cars), Uber Taxi (local taxi companies).
In 2024, Uber in Santorini only offers the Uber Taxi option.
When the app finds an available driver for that trip, it tells you his or her name, car, plate number and approximate arrival time.
Tips to book an Uber ride in Santorini
The first thing to know is that you need to allow plenty of time when planning an Uber ride in Santorini. Book the Uber ride in advance, and if no driver is available, always have a plan B.
Uber always offers other transportation options when their drivers aren’t available. They recommend local taxi companies directly in the app, so you don’t have to search everywhere for one.
Safety tips for using Uber in Santorini
Our biggest safety tip is not to get into the car if you haven’t checked the plate! Usually, the Uber driver will ask you if you’re their customer by giving your name, so you can ask for theirs and check the plate.
Some people are not registered with Uber, but see people waiting and pretending to be their drivers. Most of the time, this is simply to get more rides, but they may also ask you to give more money, or whatever.
If it’s not the plate registered in Uber, don’t take that lift because it’s a ride outside the app. You won’t be covered in the event of an incident.
Another safety tip would be to share your journey with a friend or loved one. You can do it directly in the app, and they will see the car’s route in real time!

Car rental in Santorini
Renting a car in Santorini will offer the freedom to move around easily, without waiting for a taxi. It’s a comfortable way to get around, chosen by most visitors.
🚨 Driving in Santorini is okay but still comes with a few challenges. The first thing travelers can come across is that their car is not powerful enough to make it easily to the top of steep roads. After being in that stressful situation ourselves, we therefore recommend renting a powerful car.
You also need to keep in mind that some village roads are very narrow, do not go if you are questioning if the car can make it. Other than that, renting a car is one of the best ways of transportation in Santorini Greece to see its fabulous landmarks.
Good rental cars in Santorini usually start at $50 USD (45€) per day in low season, and can go up to $75 USD (70€) in high season.
Quad or motorbike rental in Santorini
As Santorini is an island with pleasant temperatures most of the time, it’s very common to get around on a motorcycle or quad bike.
It’s a fun way to explore the island and see more than if you were in a closed car. If you’ve never tried it, don’t forget that riding a scooter or quad bike all the time also has its drawbacks.
🚨 You’re exposed to the wind all the time, which can be tiring if you’re riding long distances. The quad is a bit bumpy. This vehicle is not as easy to drive as it looks. Before setting off, learn how to position yourself for turning, stopping, etc.
Most car rental companies in Santorini also offer motorcycles and quads. They usually cost around $30 USD per day, but prices vary according to the season.
Public transportation in Santorini
There are buses to and from Santorini’s capital, Fira. If you’re staying in Fira, it’s a good way to get around. If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, it’s a bit more complicated, with longer waiting times.
From Fira, you can go to the airport, port, and to Santorini cities like Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos Beach and Ancient Akrotiri.
Bus tickets cost between 1,80€ and 2,50€ ($2 to $2,70 USD), one-way, with no transfers. You have to buy them inside the bus, by cash only. Departure times change each season and should be checked at the Fira bus station.
Public transportation in Santorini Greece is great, but unfortunately, not wheelchair accessible.
Santorini airport transfers
If you are flying to Santorini and don’t want to rent a car and take a taxi at the airport, you can pre-book an airport transfer. There is a huge chance your hotel can arrange one, or you can book one on Viator.
Can you walk around Santorini?
Walking all around Santorini would be a bit of a journey, since it has 69 kilometers (42 miles) of coastline. It could be an ultra challenge on a multiple-day hike.
However, for the classic tourist, there’s an interesting option that covers a breathtaking stretch of coastline. You can hike from Fira to Oia, or the other way around!
The hike is 10,5 kilometers long (6,5 miles), and takes around 3 hours to complete. It offers incredible views of cliffs, calderas and the sea. You can also see the villages all around the coast.
We recommend hiking in the morning, when the temperature is not too high. Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks!
